*Many of these books were referenced by Dr. Baars and Dr. Terruwe and are very useful in studying their work and gaining insight into the profound topic of affirmation. This is not, however, an endorsement of everything that is written in these books. This bibliography is based on the bibliography in the 2002 edition of Healing the Unaffirmed.

Born Only Once: A small, easy-to-read book which was written especially for the many, many people that never find true happiness in life—even if they are successful, rich, powerful, or famous. Dr. Baars dedicated the book to the lonely, the insecure and the depressed—those who feel worthless, inadequate, afraid of the world they must live in, and those who feel unloved and unlovable. This is a book about the "miracle of affirmation" and "learning to live the affirming life"—essential concepts to understand. What is it that each person needs to be a happy, healthy person? How is each of us affirmed and how can we affirm others—so that they, too, can know their goodness and worth? An excellent introduction to Dr. Baars and Dr. Terruwe's work. Originally published in 1975 and reprinted in 2001 with a preface by Suzanne Baars. 124 pages.

Healing the Unaffirmed: This book focuses on every human person's need for authentic affirmation—genuine, unconditional love—and what happens when a person does not receive that loving affirmation from another person. The important discovery of Emotional Deprivation Disorder (originally called the Frustration or Deprivation Neurosis), a syndrome resulting from a lack of affirmation in life, is discussed in this book. The authors' describe the symptoms and the treatment of this syndrome as well as what can be done to prevent it. It is a condensed version of the authors' book Loving and Curing the Neurotic, a psychiatric book which was published in 1972. Loving and Curing the Neurotic was edited and revised and republished in two editions: Healing the Unaffirmed and Psychic Wholeness and Healing.
This book is geared for a wide audience—lay persons, mental health professionals and those involved in Christian ministry and the moral formation of others. Edited and revised in 2002 so that the book is compatible with current psychological terminology. 221 pages.

Feeling and Healing Your Emotions: Written with the nonprofessional in mind, this book is also an important aid for mental health professionals, pastoral counselors and teachers. It is written in an understandable question and answer format to bring the reader to an understanding of what constitutes a healthy emotional life. It includes such topics as anger, guilt, sin, scrupulosity, repression and will-training, and discusses what is helpful and harmful to the developing and growing individual—both emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. Dr. Baars speaks from a Christian perspective on these issues and shows how people can grow to psychological wholeness and happiness. 277 pages.

Psychic Wholeness & Healing: An exploration of man’s psyche, integrated with his spiritual dimension. Essentially this book integrates modern psychological discoveries with the psychology of St. Thomas Aquinas. Dr. Terruwe and Dr. Baars take a refreshing look at the human person and healing from a Christian perspective, something which the secular humanistic, and scientific views of man fail to take into account. The reader is given an understanding of many of the repressive disorders which include symptoms such as fear, anxiety, depression, irritability, anger, fatigue, scrupulosity and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The repressive process, the different types of repressive disorders and their appropriate treatment are discussed. Clinical cases underscore the concepts in this book, bringing the reader an understanding of the freedom available through the healing of these emotional disorders and *hope* for those afflicted. This book is geared for a wide audience—lay persons, mental health professionals and those involved in Christian ministry and the moral formation of others. It includes the English translation of Dr. Terruwe's thesis on the human person's normal emotional, spiritual and intellectual life. 264 pages.
